MARYLAND WINTER KITE RETREAT, USA
In 2017 I was the international guest kite artist at the Maryland Kite Society Winter kitemaking retreat, held in Ellicott City, near Washington DC.
Over 30 kitemakers attended over 4 days, to make 2 of my kite designs - the Sting kite and the smaller Rebel kite. Participants brought their own sewing machines and equipment. Kitemaking materials were supplied during the workshops.
I had prepared illustrated instructions for each kite and presented an introductory slide show on the theme of kite design and the use of colour. Participants developed their own colour schemes and graphics for their kites.
Two of the Sting kites shown here were made by Jon Burkhardt, the third made by Mearl Balmer.
The Ellicott City conference centre was an excellent facility at which to hold the workshops. Feedback after the event was very positive.
We extended our time in the USA, to enable us to visit national monuments in DC. Then we flew south to complete a drive along the east coast, through Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, stopping in St Augustine, Savannah and Charleston, visiting art galleries, historical sites and museums.
