An exhibition of contemporary Indian art and craft at the city art gallery marked Manchester's hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and celebrated the culture of one of the Commonwealth countries.

This provided an ideal theme for me to hold a day of Indian kitemaking workshops, during which over 40 kites were made by children and adults. Materials used included mylar and polythene for durability and ease of construction. Spars were made from specially tapered bamboo.

The exhibition and workshops brought to life the overwhelming visual intensity of India and showed how art thrives in India's galleries, streets and daily life. Toys, trinkets and utensils from the bazaar, a Bollywood style billboard painting, roadside photographs and kites created a wonderful visual feast !
